Peter Weibel's six-volume encyclopedia traces the development of media from the ancient Greeks to the present day and analyzes their influence on culture. Volume 1 deals with architecture under the influence of the new media, and volume 2 focuses on musical innovations, from Mozart's automatic composition methods to the theory of molecular music. Volume 3 examines the impact of new media on art, e.g. interactive images. The other volumes deal with literature, politics and theory in the context of new media. Weibel, a renowned media scientist and artist, was director of the ZKM in Karlsruhe from 1999 to 2003.
